Alta Acqua Libreria is the most unique book shop in Venice and one of the most interesting book shops in the world. At certain times of the year Venice floods constantly and I’m sure you can imagine this provides a challenge for a shop where the product is essentially paper based! Luckily the owner has come up with an innovative way around this and has displayed his merchandise in portable, waterproof vessels such as bathtubs, rowboats and even a full size Venetian gondola. This also gives the shop an unusual and eclectic atmosphere as you wander through the rooms.
Out the back of the store there is a rather high staircase leading up the canal wall made of those chunky encyclopaedias nobody actually uses anymore (climb up to see the view) and the fire escape is just an open door leading onto a small canal. This special shop even has three friendly cats who have made themselves at home and I’m sure they are able to find a safe spot up high when the alta acqua/water invades.
Alta Acqua Libreria has a massive collection of both new and second-hand books ranging from art books to atlases. As well as a selection of postcards etc. It is totally worth a visit!
