Section 22 of Te Araroa – Puhoi Track, Auckland
5km – takes 2 hours
I’ve been waiting for summer to do the Puhoi Track section of Te Araroa, New Zealand as I’d read that parts of the trail could be slippery and I dreaded another Mt Tamahunga experience. However, I so wish I had done it earlier!! Puhoi Track is a relatively unknown gem of a trail that weaves through pine forest and native bushland and affords breath taking views of the vast Puhoi Valley. Also, let’s face it a historic pub with cold beer and a pleasant meal at the end is always a virtuous incentive for a Sunday walk.
The track can easily be accessed from the northern end at Remiger Rd or the south end at Puhoi Village. We were feeling a bit ambitious last weekend after an ultra lazy month and wanted to walk there and back punishing ourselves with the 10km (4 hr) tramp. So we started from the Puhoi end.
At Puhoi Domain look for the signage with the Te Araroa symbol and a Puhoi Lookout Loop Track sign. Puhoi Lookout Loop opened in 2008 and was the first stage in connecting Te Araroa north from Puhoi to Remiger Road. This trail does not mess around and goes straight uphill for about 10-15 mins or so rising 100m above Puhoi valley. About 5 mins into it I’m swearing that I’ll never go a month without a long walk again! But don’t worry it’s really not that bad and there is room to rest at the top where the gorgeous native bush shields you from the sun and you are rewarded with boundless views of the village below.
A little after this point you have the option of staying on Te Araroa and heading north towards Remiger Road or staying on the Puhoi Lookout Loop Track and strolling back down towards the village.
Staying true to Te Araroa we stayed on the pathway heading north. The track was well maintained and sign posted and the views of the countryside are amazing. It feels like you’re hours away from downtown Auckland rather than 45 mins or so. After about half an hour or so there are some patches where you need to walk single file and watch your feet as the path is overgrown a little. But this is nothing to worry about. It actually adds to the adventure.
Reaching Remiger Road we turned back and the return journey was easier than going up. Perhaps because I was hanging out for a chilled cider from the historic Puhoi Pub and nothing was going to slow me down.
Puhoi Track is not only a gorgeous section for trampers walking the whole Te Araroa it is also a really great trail for Aucklanders wanting to get out into nature, amongst the kauris and fantails and relax into the weekend. I will definitely be adding this section to my repeat list!
Note: Puhoi market is held on the last Sunday of every month and is a low key market with music and delicious food from the local area.
