Why am I obsessed with travel? It’s the NEW! I hate routine. I get pissed off when I’m driving down a street and realise I’ve literally driven down it a 1000 times before. Where’s the fun in that? What are you learning? What are you experiencing that you haven’t before? Some might find comfort in it. In fact, I think many do. Not me.
I want to be out there discovering unfamiliar places, learning about other cultures and how to say “hello” and “thank you”, or the one that I always seem to need “no, I’m happy walking” in another language! Meeting new people and listening to their unique stories, unearthing different viewpoints and perspectives that are so disparate to my own. Facing the daily challenge of successfully getting from one place to the next without spilling off a scooter, getting smashed by a crazy European cyclist or getting ripped off! And trying not to worry about “where the hell am I going to stay tonight”?
It’s the thrill of being on the move. Moving on to somewhere exhilarating where you haven’t been before, where you don’t know anyone and you’re not 100% sure what you’re going to find. As well as the journey to the destination itself. The time alone to reflect. Whether you’re traveling by train, plane, boat, or your own two feet you’ll experience glimpses as you go by into other people’s day to day lives. And you can choose to stop. Or you can choose to go.
For me it’s also the details of travel. I still get a thrill when the pilot puts his foot down. Every. Single. Time. I’ll leave home ridiculously early just so I can spend more time at the airport. I love airports. There’s something romantic and exciting about the comings and goings of travellers. The high emotions of hope and anticipation for those lucky enough to be heading off on an adventure or those who are hanging at the arrivals gate eagerly waiting for loved ones.
Yep, it’s the freedom to be spontaneous and live the width of each day. Seeing and experiencing things you’ve never seen before. As the Asian proverb says “It’s better to see something once than to read about it 1000 times”. I want to see everything.
